From the Permian Basin to the Digital Frontier: Meet Shelby O’Neal, ICoTA USA Past Chair and Chapter Board Member
Shelby O’Neal didn’t set out to become a bridge between the oil field and the digital age — but that’s exactly what he’s become. As Business Development Manager at Stimline Digital and the past Chair of ICoTA’s USA Chapter, O’Neal brings a rare combination of boots-on-the-ground field experience and forward-thinking commercial acumen to one of the coiled tubing industry’s most prominent volunteer leadership roles.
A Career Built in the Field
O’Neal’s career began where many great oilfield careers do — in the Permian Basin. As a Coiled Tubing Field Engineer with Schlumberger, he ran CT operations across one of the world’s most demanding basins, building the kind of hands-on knowledge that no classroom can replicate. From there, he transitioned into engineering and project management with Viking Coil Tubing before joining Stimline in 2018.
“I’ve spent the past several years helping bring digital solutions like IDEX to wireline and coiled tubing teams across North America,” O’Neal explains. As employee number one for Stimline in North America, he didn’t just sell a product — he built an entire regional operation from the ground up, assembling a team and earning trust across the industry one customer conversation at a time.
Bridging Engineering and Commerce
The transition from field engineer to commercial professional wasn’t without its challenges. O’Neal had to learn how to translate a deeply technical mindset into conversations that resonate with customers, not just fellow engineers.
“Doing that as a younger professional came with its own hurdles,” he reflects, “but staying grounded in real field experience and focusing on adding value earned respect over time.”
That dual perspective — understanding what looks good in software versus what actually works on location — has become his signature contribution to the industry. It helps him win over even the most skeptical crews and keeps his focus squarely on practical, day-to-day impact.
Coaching the Next Generation
Mentorship has always been woven into O’Neal’s professional identity. In his early days building out Stimline’s North American presence, he invested heavily in training engineers and operators on IDEX, coaching teammates on bridging the technical and commercial sides of the business.
“I enjoy seeing people ‘get it’ when the technology starts clicking in a real-world context,” he says. That same instinct — to share knowledge, build confidence, and invest in the people around him — is a core driver behind his involvement with ICoTA.
Leading the USA Chapter
O’Neal’s journey with ICoTA began simply enough — as an attendee, soaking up knowledge at conferences and events. As his career matured, so did his desire to contribute.
“As I’ve grown in my career, I wanted to find a way to give back and help keep that same environment going for younger engineers coming up,” he explains. “Taking on the Chapter Chair role felt like a good way to do that and stay involved in shaping the next phase of the community.”
A Vision for ICoTA’s Future
Looking ahead, O’Neal wants to see the USA Chapter become a more inclusive community — one where young professionals and field engineers aren’t just attending events, but actively shaping what ICoTA stands for.
On the broader stage, he believes ICoTA’s greatest opportunity lies in modernisation — finding new ways to share knowledge, showcase technology, and remain relevant to the next generation of intervention professionals.
“The industry is changing fast, and ICoTA has a chance to be the link between experience and innovation,” O’Neal says. It’s a line that could just as easily describe the man himself.
Beyond the Wellsite
Away from work, O’Neal is a devoted family man — spending as much time as possible with his wife and three daughters. He’s also a committed fitness enthusiast, a self-confessed sci-fi nerd, and, perhaps most passionately of all, a metalhead.
With over 100 metal shows attended and counting, he jokes that between the concerts and a career spent around coiled tubing units, his hearing has taken a beating. It’s the kind of self-deprecating humour that makes it easy to understand why people in this industry trust him — and why they follow his lead.
