A true Pioneer

Curtis Blount was a true pioneer in the Well Intervention industry and a vital member of the ICoTA organization. He embraced life to the fullest, and the ICoTA is privileged to have been part of his remarkable journey and legacy. 

Curtis' Career

Blount's career in the oilfield began in 1977 with Dresser Atlas. In 1979, he joined ARCO, which later became Phillips 66 and then ConocoPhillips. Throughout his more than 25 years in the field, Curtis was a two-time distinguished lecturer with SPE, he coauthored over 40 technical papers and held more than 20 patents, making significant contributions to coiled tubing and advancements in well intervention research and applied technology. He was a longtime ICoTA Board Member and served on several committees, including the SPE/ICoTA Well Intervention Conference Technical Committee.

Accolades

His accolades include being named Engineer of the Year by the SPE Alaska chapter in 2003, receiving the SPE Drilling and Completions Award in 2007, the ConocoPhillips Lifetime Technology Award in 2014, and the ConocoPhillips Spirit Award in 2018 for his work on completion optimization utilizing distributed acoustic sensing technology. In his memory, ICoTA's Annual Outstanding Paper Award was renamed the Curtis Blount Outstanding Paper Award after his passing on May 12, 2019.
